8/11-8/13/2023
On August 11-13, the Troops spent two nights camping at an old Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp on Big Creek , a tributary of the St. Joe River in Calder, Idaho. Troops learned how to cast fishing poles while angling for West-slope Cutthroat Trout. They learned axe and hatchet safety as they chopped wood, gun safety/marksmanship, knife safety/whittling, and how to tie several knots. We went on a 6-mile hike during which the troops learned triangulation and other orienteering skills with a map and compass. Two camp meals were prepared with the troops where they learned how to prepare an omelette in a bag, and a hobo dinner. A Vigil Mass was held in camp on Saturday evening. At night, the troops enjoyed shooting stars from the Perseids meteor shower.
